What makes rubber mulch different from wood mulch
Rubber mulch is made from shredded and ground recycled tires, usually coated or colored, and it behaves nothing like wood or bark mulch once it is down. The biggest difference is that it does not decompose. Wood mulch breaks down into the soil over a season or two, which is exactly why gardeners like it for beds that need organic matter, but it also means wood mulch needs replacing every one to two years. Rubber mulch skips that cycle entirely. A properly installed layer commonly holds its depth, color, and position for 10 years or more with only occasional raking to redistribute it, no annual top-up bag run.
That durability shows up in a few other ways. Rubber mulch weighs roughly the same wet or dry, since it does not absorb water the way wood fiber does, so a rain-soaked bed is not carrying noticeably more weight than a dry one. It also does not attract termites or other wood-boring insects the way bark and wood chips can, and its density and interlocking shreds make it more resistant to blowing away in wind or washing out in heavy rain than lighter wood mulch. The tradeoff is soil health: because it does not break down, rubber mulch never adds organic matter or nutrients to the soil beneath it, so it suits ornamental beds, walkways, and low-maintenance borders better than vegetable gardens or beds where you are actively trying to build soil.
Why the bag count runs higher than you'd expect
Rubber mulch is commonly sold in 0.8 cubic foot bags, noticeably smaller than the 2 or 3 cubic foot bags typical of wood mulch. That is simply because the material is denser and heavier per bag; a bag sized for wood mulch's weight would be awkward to lift if filled with rubber. The result is that a rubber mulch project needs roughly twice as many bags as the same cubic footage of wood mulch would, which can look alarming until you remember the bags themselves are proportionally smaller. One cubic yard, 27 cubic feet, works out to about 34 bags at the 0.8 cubic foot size, versus about 14 bags of 2 cubic foot wood mulch for that same yard. Some suppliers also sell larger 1.5 cubic foot bags, which cut the bag count roughly in half; check the cubic footage printed on the bag rather than assuming it matches whatever you have bought for wood mulch in the past.
Depth for a landscape bed
For decorative use, rubber mulch depth follows the same logic as wood mulch: 1.5 to 2 inches is typical for a garden bed, walkway border, or foundation planting, enough to suppress weeds and finish the look without wasting material. This is a style and function choice, not a safety requirement, so there is no fixed minimum the way there is for a fall zone. Because rubber mulch compacts less than wood mulch and does not settle as it decomposes, you generally will not need to add depth back over time the way you would with an organic mulch.
Not for playground fall-height safety surfacing

If you are surfacing a play area under a swing set, slide, or climbing structure, the depth requirement is a safety calculation, not a style choice: the Consumer Product Safety Commission ties minimum surfacing depth to the fall height of the equipment, and that depth is typically 6 inches or more for engineered wood fiber or rubber mulch, far beyond a landscape bed's 1.5 to 2 inches. Cost over time, and ordering extra
Rubber mulch costs more per bag or per cubic yard than wood mulch up front, sometimes several times more. The case for it is entirely in the years that follow: no annual reorder, no repeat spreading labor, and less material lost to wind or runoff. Whether that trade pays off depends on how long you plan to keep the bed as-is and how much you value not doing the job again next spring. As with any mulch, order a bit more than the bare measured volume, ground is rarely perfectly flat and edges settle, so a 5 to 15 percent waste buffer covers uneven areas without leaving you short mid-project. Rubber mulch also holds heat more than wood mulch in direct summer sun, worth factoring in for beds close to a patio, walkway, or heat-sensitive plants.
